Pretty Maids is one of those bands that almost can't do
wrong in my book. They've released classics such as Red Hot & Heavy
and Future World among others. All of their albums get a seven or higher
rank from me, Stripped not included since I don't count that CD as a
real release. Wake Up To The Real World, their twelfth album, is no
exception to that and shows a band that continue on the same path as
before. The path of great melodic heavy metal with excellent production
and kind of unique vocals. Ronnie Atkins is one of the finest singers
out there but unfortunately he doesn't use the rough voice as much as
before. On the other hand I'm pretty sure he'd lose his voice totally
if he continue to sing that way all the time.
This CD is a perfect mix of heavier stuff and typical
Pretty Maids ballads. My personal favorites are the heavier songs such
as I Am The Endand Terminal Violence. I have only two complaints about
the disc and those are. 1: Why did they record Perfect strangers? I
can't see the need for a cover version of the song that sound almost
identical to the original version by Deep Purple. 2: The album lack
catchy choruses. The songs are great but unfortunately they tend to
be forgotten when the CD is finished.
If you like Pretty Maids this is definitely a safe buy.
If you've never heard them before and you're into melodic metal they're
still a safe buy. Hell
Pretty Maids is always a safe buy as long
as you like metal.
