German metallers Varg is back with another effort, nineteen
months past the release of their latest album, Wolfskult. I really can't
put a label on their music, but they play some sort of aggressive, yet
happy, modern folk metal leaning towards thrash or speedier heavy metal.
Even if I heard about them before, I can't recall hearing one single
tone from them, prior to my experiences with Guten Tag.
Most of the record follows a specific thread. A cool lead
guitar play with near constant hooks and harmony parts, most of them
folk metal style. It's something they depend heavily on and I'm not
the one to complain, because this is particularly what makes this release
to what it is, even if the massive, heavy riffing and Fenrier's thunderous
drums make their contributions as well.
Almost all through the album, they go full throttle and
in a way this release is both catchy and angry at the same time. Lead
vocalist, Freki, seem to have a good portion of aggression, just waiting
to get out. Just by looking at the song titles, it doesn't take too
much brains to figure out that their lyrics are sung in their native
language. I usually have a hard time listening to bands singing in languages
I don't understand, but somehow it's not the case with Varg.
This is not a band I want to miss out on anymore, so I
will for sure check out this band's past work as soon as possible. 8
raised chalices of excitement for a great album titled Guten Tag.
