Out of all bands singing the words in the German language
the Coburn unit Varg is probably the only one that can find a way through
my narrow wickets and I usually enjoy listening to what they come out
with for more than just a song or two. I tend to like the band's oftentimes
brutal heavy metal with a sharp and quite frequent harmonic lead guitar
play on top and the way they are able to create accurate melodies in
an otherwise rough environment.
This 4-track EP offers songs that are positioned in kind
of a descending scale where the opener is mega awesome and the concluding
one is partly too slow and just okay. But don't worry, because the music
is still attacking and aggressive for the most part, with vocals that
go straight in that direction too, and the band has definitely chosen
to stay on the safe side and doesn't make an attempt to explore any
real new depths of musical variety and basically follows the proven
formula of the most recent records Guten Tag and Das Ende Aller Lügen.
So will this effort turn out as the key that takes Varg
to an entirely new level of fame? Most likely not, but it's another
chapter in the catalogue and the fans will absolutely be pleased with
the first couple of songs and since most details in the music are identifiable
with the band people will surely recognize the style when they get their
hands on it.
