The long awaited self titled debut album from German rockers
Unisonic is finally here. A power metal opus, one would think. Take
two steps back and think hard rock instead. Even if some members have
a background in power metal bands, this is a different approach to reach
the masses, from this so called supergroup.
It's 2012 and most power metal bands are long gone, or
at least they are not as popular as they used to be a decade ago. Nonetheless,
the opener and title track Unisonic is a fast song, but in fact almost
totally different from the rest of the album. Starting with song number
two, this is a hard rock release, where the songs are created to match
Michael Kiske's voice, which in my opinion is nothing but a good choice.
It's catchy, well polished and it even has some vibes
of eighties popsongs. I'm not going to exaggerate that last statement,
but when listen carefully, the vibes are there in Star Rider as well
as in a few other songs. Not many songs stand out above the others,
as it's good and solid almost all through. However, Never Too Late is
just too catchy to get my attention and the ballad and last song, No
One Ever Sees Me, should have stayed at an idea level and been kept
out of the studio, as it is boring me to death.
This release is way better than I would have ever expected
and it's worth at least 7 chalices, which means somewhere between good
and great. In a couple of months I may regret not rating it higher,
but as stated above, it has a pair of songs who's not my cup of tea,
and I don't like handing out top grades just for the sake of it.
