Folk metal veteran Andreas "Vintersorg" Hedlund
is back with his ninth release, if counting the debut mini album, only
one year past the release of his latest effort, Jordpuls. Helping him
out, like many times before, is guitarist Mattias Marklund. Yet again,
the lyrics are in Swedish, which most fans usually have no complaints
about and neither have I.
A hybrid between folk, black and even progressive metal.
This is furiosity mixed with tranquillity. The first times I listened
to this record, I didn't know what was coming up next or what to expect.
Slow parts, black metal, piano, rage, violins? It's diversity near madness,
as we travel through all these emotional roller coasters. Out of his
never ending creativity comes eight songs, each with its own individual
diversity.
Vintersorg's voice is as always clean, mourning and ravishing.
All this mixed with his deep, demonic outbreaks coming from out of nowhere.
The music and the vocals shifts in a snap and even if I have listened
to the record well over a dozen of times, I'm still fascinated by his
ability to keep the listener's interest on top. Part melodic, part chaotic.
One thing is for sure. If you like Vintersorg's past work,
and now I'm not only referring to the masterpieces Till Fjälls
or Ödemarkens Son, you will dig this album as well. If you're not
familiar with this band; this is not an album you listen to once and
then decide to scrap it. I recommend that you give it a couple of spins
and see what happens.
