Almost precisely two years past this outfit's latest effort,
Orkan, Vintersorg continues the chosen path, i.e. a discharge through
a great mix of musical approaches and different kinds of vocal passages,
including some female assistance. It's black metal light to simpler
heavy metal and naturally traditional folk metal elements with computerized
instruments to fill the space.
What makes this thing special is that this phenomenon
isn't attributed to each song on its own, but generally within a large
amount of them to build a picture of the unexpected. The frequent variations
and the many tempo changes may partially make this music to be seen
as rather chaotic and at times also somewhat complex and perhaps not
that easy to grasp at the first point. It might take a couple of spins
before people who haven't listened to Vintersorg earlier are set and
ready to go to dig deeper into what this effort shows.
Singularity is indeed an important factor and Mr. Vintersorg's
specific voice sets the songs to different dimensions, although his
capacity never was among the most talented ones. His aptitude is more
expressed through a great side of empathy and profound, intelligent
and rather tricky lyrics sung in his native tongue, Swedish.
Naturbål is absolutely a piece that's created to
fit the Vintersorg vein. To me, it doesn't stand out as something a
little extra though and I'm not totally convinced by this effort's greatness.
Even if it is a solid record, I struggle to find that massive feeling
of elation. Perhaps I've heard things similar to this, coming out of
Mr. Vintersorg's creativity earlier.
