Mygrain - Orbit Dance
![]() Mygrain is a new and upcoming band from Finland. They managed to receive a recording contract with Spinefarm after their first demo, an impressive achievement in itself. I have labelled their music as melodic death metal but it's not the typical finnish brand. This, apart from some glimpses of Children Of Bodom because of the keyboard work, actually sound more like the American kind of melodeath the way Soilwork has perfected it. A lot of bands seem to be following this path nowadays but I don't mind because this dynamic mix between melody and aggression really speaks to me. Without reading Mygrain's biography I wouldn't have guessed that they were the rookies they rightfully are. Their performance is flawless, driven and tight. The vocalist Tommy has a dynamic voice that suits this type of metal perfect with aggressive and varied growls as well as soulful clean singing. He is behind the elite though (read Björn "Speed" Stridh) but the potential is definitely there. The great guitar work regarding riffs and melodic leads is also one Mygrain's strongest assets. If it's something that has to be better in the future then it's the song writing. They show their capacity in a couple of tracks, especially the title track and Veil Of Sun because of the great and addictive melodies, but some songs seem to lack strong choruses that stick or interesting arrangements. The search for an own identity should also be one of Mygrains most important tasks in the future. These are just small defects that I am positive they will adjust since this is, as I said earlier, only the early stages of Mygrain. I will for certain follow their career from now on because Orbit Dance is a quite impressive debut album.
