The brain behind the Primal Fear organisation, Mat Sinner,
returns with his other band Sinner which he releases albums with "on
the side" so to speak, when time allows. During their by now 26
years of activity, the band has released some really good albums, for
example Touch Of Sin (1985), Judgement Day (1997), The End Of Sanctuary
(2000), There Will Be Execution (2003) and especially The Nature Of
Evil (1998).
Mat himself and guitarist Henny Wolter are responsible
for most compositions on this album, but Mat has also been working with
Igor Gianola (U.D.O.) on three songs and Magnus Karlsson (Allen/Lande,
Bob Catley, Starbreaker among many others) on one. The ones where Gianola
has been involved are clearly U.D.O.-sounding in their structure. However,
considering the guitarists involved in the writing, I do miss some more
sharp and distinct riffs.
The title track Crash & Burn is nothing but a brilliant song with
a great , thunderous riff and a catchy chorus and this is good, old
Sinner as I love them and I am glad to hear that at least one more song,
Fist To Face, follows in the same vein. There is overall a good mix
of straight forward, classic metal songs (the mentioned Crash &
Burn, Fist To Face), more rockier ones with more catchy elements (Heart
Of Darkness, Unbreakable, Connection) and those more in between (Break
The Silence, The Dog, Heart Of Darkness, Like A Rock).
This is a bit more soft and laid back album than for example
The End Of Sanctuary and especially There Will Be Execution and The
Nature Of Evil, and Sinner will probably never top the latter, but it
is good and vital enough for extensive and enjoyable listening and Sinner
are not by far to be counted out yet. I personally prefer this before
the couple of latest Primal Fear albums, musical- but also vocal wise.
