Powerworld is Ilker Ersin's (ex-Freedom Call) baby and
he has collected a bunch of quite experienced members for this band
(it's supposed to be a band, not a project). Barish Kepic usually handles
the guitar in Jaded Heart, drummer Jürgen Lucas has been a member
of At Vance and Nils Neuman has just as Ilker previously paid his duties
in Freedom Call. On the vocal spot however we find a newcomer in the
shape of the 23-year-old Steffen Brunner.
Powerworld live in the same neighbourhood as Freedom Call
since the priority is set on extremely catchy melodies instead of heaviness.
They are handling their craft quite well I must say and the album is
filled with easily digestible melodies that stick like glue instantly.
Lake Of Eternity for instance has a chorus that you can't get rid of
once you've heard it. If you are into this type of "Metal"
you are in for a treat here.
However, the voice of Steffen Brunner is quite weak and
he is trying too much to sound like other power metal vocalists rather
than finding his own voice so to speak. The production is also a bit
too thin for my taste and since Powerworld is a quite soft band a more
juicy and fat production would've been for the better in this case.
I am sure that Powerworld doesn't want to be the heaviest
or most original band in the world, they just want to make great and
catchy songs. On their debut album they have succeeded with this task
fairly well since the number of memorable choruses is a few. This record
is for all of you who like Freedom Call, don't expect Powerworld to
be just as good though.
