Shortly after the release of Pieces Of Primal Expressionism, Mörk Gryning declared their departure from the scene and the band was no more. The rests of what once was a great squad of innovative black metal walked their own ways and the reason for the splitting was announced to be the lack of interest for the music. Now to the ten thousand points question: how the hell can you split a band on those grounds and just a year later put together and present a new work entitled Mörk Gryning?

The reasons for this album are told to be that they wanted to release the unreleased songs in a worthy way. I don't know if this acting could be called worthy. I mean the band doesn't exist any more, and they won't do any reunion shows in future...or will they? Excuse me but I am fed up with all these ridiculous split ups and reunions, what a fucking mess. How hard can it be to do music if you are devoted and got the passion for it? Ill hope this trend will end immediately as it will destroy the bonds between labels, bands and fans. Well', this critic doesn't go completely to the guys in Mörk Gryning as the band actually don't exist anymore and I hope it stays that way.

What about the title epos then: Mörk Gryning. The swansong of a nearly twelve year long story filled with black magical moments to remember. The debut album Tusen År Har Gått struck down like a blistering bomb with its melodic black metal in the veins of Dissection. The same goes for the Return Fire album. Not to mention their absolutely best creation, Maelstrom Chaos, recorded at Grieghallen. A masterpiece in musical blasphemy, chaos, damnation and unearthly melody lines. But tell me the good story that lasts forever - none do. The Primal Pieces of Expressionism was to me quite good and felt fresh at a start but it became obvious that the reasons for this was spelled different wills and the crackle in the wall became visible. With this in mind the career of this band should end up in most worthiest of ways. This is the main reason for this albums existence I guess. The production aren't the best. And by reading the info on the CD, the recording sessions have been many and in different studios as well. My guess is that this album is filled with leftover ideas from early mentioned albums during the years. A bit sad as we talked about a worthy ending...

Besides the fact that the production feels plastic and hollow here and there, parts of the songs are as good as it always been. The song writing seems to be, as always, ok and sometimes brilliant. This album seems to be something of a crossover between the Maelstrom Chaos and the Primal Pieces Of Expressionism album. Blackened killer riffs with thrash touches combined with the innovative and complex diversity from the previous album. The whole result aren't solid, neither brilliant. It is more like it leaves you with even more questions. Some really good songs can be found that truly are worthy to be the burial hymns of this band. Ingen Dyrkan, a wonderful piece of attack and melody making. The Sun, a chaotic monster with a cool spooky sampling. And the Disguise My Parting, a song that feels representative to everything this band have created. Named songs are really good and are highly recommended. Otherwise I don't know. It feels just ok, nothing more. All in all I think this album is a step better than the previous one, mainly because the recommended songs saves this album. A quite good cover can also be heard. The victim is the Neverwhere song originally done and massacred by At The Gates. Wonder when they will do their reunion...?
