This is really exciting. I mean how do you follow up an album as “Maelstrom Chaos”? An album that at least in my ears are a masterpice. The new
album of Mörk Gryning is called “Pieces Of Primal Expressionism”. This time the swedish armada stayed In Sweden to put the tunes of “The Dawn” on tape. After the visit to the famous Grieghallen, Bergen (Nor), for the recording of “Maelstrom..”, the band meet up with the producers of Dug Out studio (Swe) to record the bands 4th album.

After a first listening to the whole album, I´m really confused. No doubt that Mörk Gryning includes very skilled musicians. The sound is great, but not in a way that I´m used to when I listen to M.G. The album is very well produced with a much heavier guitarsound than on earlier albums. In
fact its more of everything on this album and also the vocals are a bit darker. But do I like it? After a coupple of more listenings, I realise more and
more what a complicated album this is. Not in a bad way or so, its just that I cant put the finger on this album and say, oh.. this and that are cool..
There are very various arrangements in the songs, and if it was up to the songwriting it would be easy to say that this album is a supreme masterpiece. Its obvious that the band wanted to take a step forward and create something completely new, I realise this when I listen to the slow
solo part in “An Old Mans Lament”.

This is “beautiful and intellectual metal” at a high level. But later on “The Worm”, it starts with a riff that wouldn’t surprise me if it had been Pantera or Meshuggah in the stereo, and I´dont get any wiser when I hear something that makes me think of Emperor.
And as this wasn’t enough, later I hear some tecnotronic vibes that reminds me of Samael! This makes the album a bit complicated if you know what I
mean.

In my ears this album has very litte in common with the bands earlier releases, its called evolution I think. But overall I must say that this is a good album with speedfreaks such as, “The Cradle Of Civilization”, “Fragments And Pieces” and the really heavy and cruel “Our Urn”. Ask me in five years and I´ll probably haven´t got any wiser regarding this album and as I said before its not bad, just very modern and different. So if you want something fresh that strives forward in the world of black metal, buy it. But if you are a “conservative worshiper” of the debut “Tusen År Har GSått”, you proberbly get dissapointed.
