Third album from Sixx:A.M. and the title Modern Vintage
is definitely spot on. As far as I'm concerned it's nevertheless pretty
unfortunate that the band is trying to be too modern for its own good.
It's indeed a varied record in terms of music styles and songs and it
feels like all kinds of different types of music are represented. Unfortunately
it has its evident variations in quality too.
This album really has potential in a lot of the material,
but at the end of the day the band is really blending a few rather great
songs with utter crap. Songs like the first single Gotta Get It Right
and especially Get Ya Some, Let's Go and Before It's Over mostly blow
the fattest ass you can ever imagine, while tracks like Stars, Relief,
Give Me A Love and Hyperventilate actually are pretty captivating, but
I guess also a little deceiving, since they somehow are able to put
me to a position where I sometimes believe that this record really is
all right in total. It's safe to say that a gathering of well-known
musicians, creating rock music, doesn't mean that they actually are
able to bring out an awesome end result on every occasion.
I find Modern Vintage being too experimental and too challenging,
but it really proves that this unit is trying to find new ways in an
everyday world as well. All this near constant jumping back and forth
in character also eventually gets to me and the more I listen to this
release, the more disappointed I get. Personally I can't figure out
why they just don't focus on making great songs, instead of appearing
something different than what they're supposed to be. It would have
made this record greater by far and they definitely have the ability
to do so.
