Swedish death metal outfit Evocation is back after two
years with their fourth full length studio album. With a rocky past,
they have found consistency and momentum, and they now seem determined
to take this band to another level and we'll all see what happens in
the near and perhaps bright shining future.
Illusions Of Grandeur is closer to melodic, than to massive
brutal death metal and since I'm a heavy metaller by blood, this is
what I look for when listening to bands of this genre. I get stuck on
their guitarplay, their hooks and I also think that vocalist Thomas
Josefsson is fulfilling his duties and achievements.
It's hard to pick songs for our very own Staff's pick,
since most of the songs are somewhat equally good and I certainly can't
find any fillers on this solid release, but I'll go for the opener and
title track Illusions Of Grandeur with its hooks and speed, the thunderous
Perception Of Reality, as well as the fierce monster The Seven Faces
Of God.
I recommend this release for fans of Amon Amarth. Even
if their sounds are kind of different, I'm sure you'll find this effort
worth listening to if you're a fan of their fellow countrymen. A limited
edition digipak CD with three bonus tracks is also available for the
diehards. 8 chalices is a great number, as I usually try to not get
too overblown with my ratings.
