The outspoken and in a way legendary frontman Sebastian
Bach recently activated quite a good and well-known lineup to record
his third proper solo release after Angel Down and Kicking & Screaming.
Two records that absolutely had their brilliant peaks, but also a few
tracks that left me without any greater impressions and after listening
to Give 'Em Hell intensively during the last weeks, it seems like this
one is no exception to the rule.
The songs tend to never really plunge into my inner senses.
Most of them climb up the ladder, but aren't able to take those few
last steps to reach the roof and turn out killer. I'm sitting here thinking
that sooner or later, these songs will crack the sky and shoot repeated
rounds of awesome experiences through my body, but somehow they never
get to the point where they come out as winners. I totally enjoy a few
of them, yet the lion's share ends up somewhere in barren lands where
they seem to get stuck in a state of potentially good.
Give 'Em Hell shows that Bach has the ability to sing
a little youthful at certain moments and at those points the very best
of him shines brighter, even though he obviously isn't able to handle
the highest stuff and his range and power has definitely diminished
over the years. With slightly expired effect, his work is actually still
pretty dominant and current occasionally, although the comparisons regarding
him always end up somewhere around 1990 and to compare with those outstanding
efforts is just a completely waste of time.
If putting aside the April Wine cover Rock N' Roll Is
A Vicious Game, the vocal melodies of the songs don't differ specifically
from Bach's two previous releases. The basics of the actual music however
deliver different aspects in performance and idea and I feel that the
songs have a lack of the intensity that I am so much looking for in
his heavy metal. Although it's a solid work all throughout, I am not
really able to connect to the songs all the way to mission accomplished.
This is nevertheless a fairly good release and I believe that fans to
his past solo albums may find some attraction to this record as well.
