Celebrator is a compilation of unreleased tracks, bonus
tracks, cover versions, b-sides, etc.. A couple of bootleg versions
featuring many of these songs have been circling around for years and
now it's time for a proper release from the heavy metal veterans themselves.
This album is of course nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking,
considering almost all songs are in fact b-sides not good enough for
the albums; not saying that there could not be any gems on it though.
Most songs cover the last decade and there are no songs at all from
the early years of U.D.O.'s career, whom in my opinion would be more
interesting, because the latest releases have more or less been albums
with almost no new ideas and just a stretch down the assembly line.
I can find a couple of good songs on Celebrator, like
Hardcore Lover with its cool rhythm, as well as Streets Of Sin and Scream
Killers with their straightforward heavy metal. The piano version of
Balls To The Wall won't go down in history as something extraordinary,
or perhaps it will, because it's more special than good.
This release is something all hardcore U.D.O. fans should
get their hands on, but it's nothing for the ordinary listener. Naturally
it's hard to rate an album like this, as the intension never was to
release their best material. I can't hand out more than three chalices,
because the songwriting of most of these b-sides are in fact not especially
good. It's not utterly bad, but should only be purchased to complete
a collection. If you're not familiar with this band, start with just
about anything else.
