Zimmers Hole from Canada is a new acquaintance to me,
but a very pleasant one. That is, after the initial frown regarding
the jokingly attitude and the constant juvenile approach. I usually
don't appreciate things like that, but if you can overlook occasional
things like funny sounds, burps, farts and humorous lyrics, you have
a real smorgosbord of metal to dig in to here.
Musically this is awesome, with heavy and tight metal
that moves between thrash, ordinary heavy metal and sometimes on or
even beyond the border to death metal. The production is bombastic and
one of the better ones I have come across. It is officially kind of
a parody metal band, or at least has been in the past, but some humorous
elements aside, this beats the crap out of most metal albums from the
past years. A high level of musicianship with great songs containing
a multitude of groove, heaviness and catchy hooks. Vocalist Chris Valagao
is magnificent and manages easily to sing convincing no matter the style
of the song, and without losing any of his intensity and pondus.
The band consists of the Strapping Young Lad members Jed
Simon, Byron Stroud and Gene Hoglan, the latter playing in this band
for the first time. The remaining member of Strapping Young Lad, the
well known Devin Townsend, is responsible for the vocal production on
this album.
If you are a fan of pounding metal with great riffs, double
bass drums and want a new and fresh approach to it, my recommendation
is that you should check this album up as soon as you can. In the meanwhile
I am personally already on the hunt for their two previous albums, Bound
By Fire (1996) and Legion Of Flames (2002).
