Well, what have we got here? The debut CD from a band
called Vindictiv. Never heard of them before but taking a look at the
members of the band immediately raises the interest of the disc. On
vocals we have Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum, Madison
and Brazen Abbot to name a few) and on bass Nalle Påhlsson (currently
in Treat). This alone makes the CD very interesting and worth at least
a listen. Göran Edman is a great singer but his previous work really
is a hit or miss for me. His vocals on Yngwie Malmsteen's "Eclipse"
and John Norum's "Total control" is nothing less than pure
magic and fits the music perfectly. Some of his other work though, like
the Benny Jansson stuff, doesn't suite me at all.
So where does Vindictiv stand then? Are they a hit or
a miss? Luckily they really are a big hit and the best thing Edman have
laid down his vocals on for a long time in my opinion. The music leaves
me with a somewhat divided impression since it on one hand sounds like
an AOR album and then on the other hand you have the Yngwie sounding
guitar solos in the same song. Don't get me wrong here because it really
is a great album packed with great music and maybe it's the diversity
of every song itself that makes it so good. As almost always I find
the faster songs to be the ones I like the most on an album. In this
case the best songs are A Quiet Life and Living Colours which are two
really good rocking songs. The solos really sounds like something out
of a Yngwie CD and for me that really is good since I've always been
a fan of that kind of music. The only dull moment of the CD is the boring
ballad Hymn To Desdemona but luckily it's only 3 minutes short.
The verdict is that if you like melodic metal and/or neoclassical
metal this definitely is something I can recommend. When the last song
have ended I want to hear more and that must be a sign as good as any
that this is a really nice album. Check it out and I'm pretty sure that
you won't be disappointed.
