Former and two of the founding members of Saxon, guitarist
Graham Oliver and bassplayer Steve Dawson re-formed Son Of A Bitch in
the mid-nineties, together with another ex-member of Saxon, Pete Gill,
Thunderhead vocalist Ted Bullet and second guitarist Haydn Conway.
The name Son Of A Bitch was first used in the mid-seventies,
before Oliver and Dawson teamed up with members of Coast to form the
now legendary band Saxon. Gill and Bullet left the band soon after the
release of Victim You and the remaining members formed their own version
of Saxon, due to legal actions later renamed to Oliver Dawson Saxon.
This album was originally released in 1996 and sixteen
years later a remastered version with one bonus track in Running Away
(From You) sees the light of day. It starts with some cool riffing eighties
style with Bitch Of A Place To Be. The first four tracks, together with
More For Me and Victim You are all good straight heavy metal songs,
but the rest of the album include a pair of rather poor songs, a cheesy
ballad in I Still Care and a couple of decent fillers.
There are many riffs that can be traced back to their
past work and everything else would have come as a total surprise. The
album's best song is speedy Past The Point, even if it has resemblances
with Dio's Don't Talk To Strangers. This is a cool document of what
they sounded like back then and all in all a decent album. Not great,
not bad.
