![]() Venom is Impellitteri's 10th studio album and with that amount of records in the catalogue, I immediately start thinking of why a bigger kind of success never has come to life for this unit. It has been close to 3 decades since this band's first effort saw the light of day and I can't recall anyone of my friends or acquaintances ever mentioning something rock solid about Chris and his crew, negative or positive. To be honest, before I took the opportunity to check out this new installment, this outfit's past is more or less a blank chapter in my book. This record projects heavy metal with a few elements of being slightly progressive and it also has tendencies to somewhat approach thrash metal. The songs are generally rather speedy and they include a shredding performance by Chris all throughout the record. He really is a wizard with the strings; no question about it. Some of the songs, yet too few though, are rather accurate and smashing, but simultaneously I don't fancy the actual sound of the guitar that much. The rhythms are also mainly too chopped up and they feel kind of forced, in order to make even more additional room for the crushing guitar play. The actual performance is near flawless and Rob Rock's voice is a great ingredient as well, yet skills and talent don't equal being a successful musician in terms of songwriting. There are so many factors in music that are more important to the metal fan than being a celebrated guitar virtuoso, I guess. If you're really into rapid and intricate guitar plays and if you're looking for an album where mainly all efforts are made to make the guitar conquer all other elements, then I suggest that you check out this album unless you want to miss something.
