Black metal has seen perhaps the most genre bending developments
in the last decade of all the metal subgenres. Starting with the experiments
from many of the 90's outfits such as Satyricon at the turn of the millennia,
Deathspell Omega soon followed and became the flagship of avant-gardistic
black metal. The evolution has since seen the merging of almost every
musical influence possible with the conventional black metal sound.
The incorporation of psychedelic/space rock influences has been a particularly
fortunate spawning. My personal favorites are America's Infera Bruo,
but perhaps the most prolific of all the psychedelic black metal bands
are Finland's Oranssi Pazuzu.
The Finns third album 'Värähtelijä' sees
the band take a big step away from conventional black metal. The thread
linking the entire album together is the ominous melancholic space rock.
Also consistently present are the vocals which serves more as a part
of the rhythm section to keep the atmosphere flowing rather than as
a solo instrument. Under the vocals and space rock layers the listener
finds a combination of almost VON-repetitive black metal and doom-laden
ambiance. The former does the job with honors, once again proving that
the Finnish scene is currently superior in the riff writing department.
The ambient sections on the other hand, although managing to keep the
atmosphere consistent on the surface, loses much of the nerve the album
is so reliant on and with that my interest.
When the psychedelic layer entangles the conventional
black metal riffs and the solemn growls 'Värähtelijä'
conjures a dense ominous atmosphere dragging all your nightmares, anxieties
and fears to the surface. The album balances on the edge of a knife
though and on my part the excellence moves on to outright boredom as
soon as the black metal part of this trifecta gets lost in favor of
an ambient piece. With more focus on the former 'Värähtelijä'
could have knocked on the door to greatness, now it becomes a solid
effort but not much more.
