Recently we got a request in our guest book to write more about 'Bad Religion and stuff', and what could be more suitable than a review of the brand spanking new album from punk'n'roll band The Generators? The Los Angeles based band was started in 1997 by Doug Kane and Ernie Berry which used to play together in the band Schleprock that saw some success and was signed to the major label Warner.

The Generators comes labeled as punk but it is with a bit more mainstream approach and not that kind of punk I symbolize with bands like Sex Pistols, Discharge or Ramones, but more of Skate-punk in the vein of Bad Religion, Pennywise, Offspring, Green Day and the likes of those. The Winter Of Discontent is the sixth studio album from The Generators and I find it to be melodic punk rock with the most in common with Bad Religion, not least with the opening track Walking Away. But then I haven't really been following this scene for the last ten years, something that could be worth knowing when I draw comparisons to other bands.

They are sharing much of the melodic and guitar harmony parts with Bad Religion, but The Generators put on another side as well as they are spicing it up with a rock n roll kind of attitude as well, almost making them the missing link between Rocket From The Crypt and Bad Religion. They are also following the golden code of not using more than four chords in a song or having songs longer than three minutes. Not sure abbut the chords though, but the length is very seldom over three minutes, and if they are it is not with much.

The Winter Of Discontent is a good album with lot of potential air-play with many of the songs, not as slick and not obvious 'made-for-mainstream-sounding' as lot of those punk-rock wannabe pop kids frequently trying to look cool on MTV, but nevertheless it should it suit rather well for mainstream media. The Generators works really good for me in small doses, I get easily tired to listen to this kind of music on album, it comes out so much better when it is played live and a needed raw essence is added.

And as for something to the department of worthless knowing I chopped this from their labels website: In the meantime The Generators have been asked from one of L.A.'s biggest porno directors to contribute a bunch of their songs into some hot steamy videos! They might even be appearing playing in one of them too, we shall see.
