Brazilian and former Viper, Angra and Shaman vocalist
Andre Matos now releases his third solo album. Long awaited by some
fans and die-hards. Speaking for myself, I had almost no idea what to
expect from this release. Some sort of power metal was my sole and obvious
thought.
The Turn Of The Lights is split in two fractions. It contains
nine tracks of melodic and catchy power metal, sometimes symphonic,
other times progressive and also just straight traditional. The remaining
three tracks, Gaza, Sometimes and Fake Plastic Trees, are ballads, or
in this case more similar to dreadful and stinking lullabies. One thing
is for sure, ballads aren't what Matos should release in 2012. For God's
sake, these three tracks are utter shit. I'm usually not an opponent
to ballads and from time to time they can lift a record to heights unknown,
but the songs presented here bore me to death and should have never
made the album.
Enough with the blood spitting and froth streaming from
my mouth corners. When counting the ballads out, the major part of the
songs are good or even great, with some minor exception. When I play
the CD and skip the three songs mentioned above, it's nothing but a
joyful and pleasant ride. The overall impression however gets a thorn
in the side and my total rating stays at 6 chalices, which actually
means a good record and shouldn't certainly not be considered bad.
