Although Paradox released their debut album twenty-five
years ago, Tales Of The Weird is just their sixth full length release.
Obviously, they've been on hiatus most of the time and without consistency,
you don't get much attention with all the killing competition these
days and the jungle of bands out there. This is actually the first time
I get to hear one of their records, so I have nothing from their past
work to weigh this album against.
This band plays thrash metal with elements of both power
and heavy metal, or perhaps it's the other way around? It's not brutally
fast, but more on the brink to catchiness, or at least attempts to create
such atmosphere, still without significant compromises to their thrash
foundation. Like many bands in this genre, diversity isn't their main
goal. I don't feel that this loose monotony affects the whole album's
outcome though, as some songs are varied, like for instance the epic
title track.
A well known expression is saying that this album has
potential, meaning that it contains good stuff, but never reaches a
certain point of climax. The songs are within the same span and not
many songs stick out above the others. It's a fairly good release however
and I will check out their catalogue when given time.
