Traditional folk metal meets diversity when Italian octet
Krampus release their full length debut album. Nothing groundbreaking
I must say, but still interesting and slightly different from all thousands
of bands that follow the trends. It's hard not to these days, when it
seems like everything is already recorded.
Survival Of The Fittest is of course based on heavy folk
metal, but with their death metal parts, clean sung songs, aggressive
songs with clean choruses, semi-ballads and those electronic tones in
for instance the furious track Redemption, who makes me think of the
disco era back in the late seventies, they take one step away from the
traditional approach. Make no mistake though, the disco tones are no
way near significant for this album and just a contribution to the overall
feeling.
The major part of the songs are heavy and a bit brutal
like Beast Within and Aftermath. A couple of songs are, in a good way,
totally out of sense. The Bride could, with a ounce of imagination,
be on an American alternative metal album and so could the chorus on
Rebirth. Further we get a couple of decent guitar solos, as well as
violins and bagpipes to the full.
When in the genre folk metal, all kinds of different and
not traditional metal instruments set their marks on the final result
and I suggest you listen to this album a few times before deciding what
it's all about. If you're into modern folk metal, I would be surprised
if you don't dig this album.
