Storm Seeker is the debut album of ICS Vortex as a solo
artist, following his "dishonourable discharge" from Dimmu
Borgir a couple of years ago. Describing the album is no easy feat as
it contains a strange mix of gritty rock, post black metal, progressive/alternative
rock, Scandinavian folk music and power metal.
The lyrical themes vary almost as much as the music itself,
dealing with darker subjects as well as cars and gambling. It does feel
a little strange to hear Vortex's dramatic, high-pitched voice singing
about the engine and the speakers of a car but The Blackmobile is probably
the best song on the entire album.
While Vortex does have a good voice, it lacks the power
to carry an entire album - it does get a little bit tedious and somewhat
whiny after a while. It's obvious that there are a lot (a lot!) of different
things going on here and to me it feels more like a huge collection
of ideas than an actual album. There is definitely some potential here
but it needs more refinement.
