If you have been on the lookout for a "Wolverine
Blues" sounding album, look no further. The Generals are tapping
into the death 'n' roll genre as laid out by the mighty Entombed, and
they're doing it with such a confidence in their stride that at times
I just can't help myself from banging my head out of joy. Succumbing
too deep in the past glories of other bands without bringing anything
new to the table can be a dangerous thing - your band can be dismissed
as unoriginal, or worse, as sell-outs.
The Generals are balancing a fine line, but they have
enough good song writing skills to keep to the right side of the abyss.
Of course the band are not ashamed of where they came from - Sweden
have quite a fe w good bands in the death metal genre - but "Stand
Up Straight" is not a pure homage to the past.
The sound of "Stand Up Straight" is easily recognised
as the straight death metal style as it was perfected by Entombed and
Dismember and lately taken up by for example Tribulation. Tuned down
guitars and an overall meatiness to the production makes me feel right
at home.
"Stand Up Straight" clocks in at 37 minutes
- 37 minutes of no-nonsense quality death 'n' Roll which I feel pretty
confident will satisfy many metalheads who are fans of this genre.
