Norwegian The Kovenant are back with their fourth longplayer after a three year break.
Musically this is perhaps the most "strange" album I've ever reviewed. We're talking something called Cyber Metal here and the title S.E.T.I (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) also tells us something about the direction of the music.

This is something of a hybrid and a "bastard creation" between many different styles on a metal foundation. It's altogether a crazy mix of goth, industrial, hardcore and synth that meet a variety of different guitarsounds. Vocalwise we're into a more thrashy and sometimes a more death metal growling sounding one. All this is packed together in a sound that is something of a metal- techno meeting with a modern touch over it. Lyrically The Kovenant deal with matters of human existence, and focus mainly on the search for truth and the origin of humankind.

This isn't as you can understand something that immediately sticks and it definitely requires a great deal of listening before you begin to get a grip of the album. One minut you're listening to a very good refrain with more epic touches and the next you're being sucked into a weird sounding interlude that could have been taken from a horror-movie or sometimes a computer game. All songs have been recorded and composed on the computer and the band wanted a more "organic" sound, what the heck that means..........

If you feel that you need to add a very different element to your collection The Kovenant should perhaps be of interest. The rest of us who prefer our metal in a more standard version should absolutely not bother with S.E.T.I.
I can give the band credits for a great production and good vocals, but besides a few pretty good choruses that's about all good stuff I can mention. This is of course very personal and some of you might get a bit curious and want to explore the cyber metal world, but for heaven's sake - listen first. I for one satisfy my needs in this department by watching The X-Files and listen to plain old powermetal in the commercial breaks!
