US street date August 5th via Loud & Proud Records.
I'm the first to admit that I never really listened to
Kix back in the day. I heard a few songs here and there, but I never
actually gave this unit any time and effort to really see what they
were made of. When the opportunity arose to check out the band's seventh
album and the first in nineteen years, I therefore decided that it was
time to pick up on passed time.
What I mainly hear is a bunch of grown men who still sings
about youthful things, despite their own aging. It's like the band is
still living the dream and this release is more or less a journey back
to American late eighties or early nineties hard rock. The songs are
pretty much in the same vein overall, meaning a good authentic groove,
perhaps comprised of a little boogie oriented structures occasionally
and also pretty direct with classic and rather cool guitar playing.
The song material differs a lot in caliber all throughout
the record though. I see all kinds of quality changes taking place.
A few songs are close to being awesome and some are fairly catchy, yet
not totally arresting to make me pay full attention. It continues all
the way down to what I believe are tracks which should never have left
the state of demo recordings. At the end of the day, a decent record
with high mountains and deep valleys which probably will be best served
on a designated playlist.
