When I listen to this debut album, I mainly hear ten hard
rock songs with inspiration from several decades back. Personally, I
realized a long time ago that I was sick of obvious AC/DC wannabes and
it didn't take me five seconds to see in which direction this piece
was heading; a pretty decent release at the better moments, yet ordinary
and standardized.
Even though the band themselves admit that they derived
their inspiration from the mega-dinosaur, it would be a greater experience
if they did focus more on an own orientation. Thundermother is decidedly
no replica of the past, but it's a little too obvious from where they
have gathered their foundations, and with this amount of bands already
following this concept, I rapidly put up a barricade of doubt and it
becomes difficult to not compare them against the originals.
These five chicks, mainly hailing from Sweden, possesses
a good singer in Clare Cunningham, who absolutely works well with the
music. No question about it. On the other hand, with a guitar tune that
often has rather the same settings as the old giants had, my attention
is set a little too much on past stuff instead of on what is offered
here. However, if you have never or rarely listened to older bands playing
this type of music, perhaps you can find satisfaction in Thundermother's
efforts. It's after all pretty rough hard rock with a kind of scarred
appearance.
I have given this album around fifteen spins and the more
I listen to it, the more it feels very common and everyday. I don't
think that it's really bad or totally worthless, but it shows me no
signs of something extra and it feels somewhat monotonous as well. I
don't find a pulsating vibe during this half hour and I don't find anything
that is able to lift this one to a satisfactory level. Even if the music
has some attitude, it lacks that powerful fuck you-feeling, which in
some cases can take things to higher grounds and make your blood rush
faster.
