Hauteville is yet another new and fresh sounding band
from France that is unveiled thanks to Lion Music. Just recently the
very same label released a record by another good band from the same
country in the shape of Venturia. Even if the mentioned bands safely
can be filed in the progressive genre, Hauteville has nothing to do
with metal. Their progressive music includes elements from a lot of
different genres, pop and rock mainly though, and this makes them quite
interesting and unique. Hauteville's strongest asset is probably the
female singer Lydie Gosselin. She might not have the best voice technically
speaking but she most certainly has charisma and an own identity.
Despite the fact that they have got the right tools Hauteville
doesn't engage my interest that much. The reason for this is that the
song writing is way behind the capacity of the band. They create interesting
music that they perform in a quite satisfying way but the songs lack
melodies that stick or infectious arrangements. It doesn't matter if
your car is shiny and new when the engine doesn't work, right? The highlight
of the album is without a doubt Immaculate Eyes, a composition that
originally was made and performed by Dalbello (a unique lady who recorded
high quality albums in the eighties) which should speak for itself.
Hauteville is a band with high potential but without songs to use these
conditions.
