With bands like Blood Red Throne and Zyklon, our western neighbours have shown that they are up to more than pale and fading black metal nowadays. In the dark waters of mentioned bands there always will follow usurpers. The most threatening band to the heavy weight title in Norway for the ex- Emperor combatants have now seen the light of day. The Deviant with roots and history back to 122 Stabwound and Gehenna are ready to strike us with the debut, Ravenous Deathworship, released through Tabu Recordings.

The first thing that strikes me in the opening on Merciless is the intensity combined with the old school feeling. The similarities with Blood Red Throne and Zyklon are crushed and liquidated immediately. This sounds like the perfect mixture of old and present time and without any pre-listening to this band I must say that I am overwhelmed by the material on Ravenous Deathworship. Intensified old school death metal with a voice from hell. Dolgar on vocals and bass can best be described as an even meaner version of Pete Helmkamp, Angel Corpse and Order From Chaos. The same goes for The Deviants music, mean as hell. The whole album is contaminated by a sick and morbid stench. Intense death metal with excellent voice, lurking in the twilight void of death and black Metal and even though the music is far from any obvious black metal ingredients it summons the vicious feelings.

It is quite technical and varied from mid tempo with dark compositions as on Serpent to the outrageous Purity Of Hate and the production is very competent with focus on the heavy aspects. The vocals are unbelievable good and feel like something that have been lost for many years in this genre. A step back towards classic ones as Altars Of Madness and Hammer Of Gods. The composing and arrangements hold very high class, not from a technical point of view but more from vibes and feelings. For example I don't think I've heard so cool guitar arrangements and solos since Left Hand Path or Clandestine, lay to this the thick black shadow that surrounds the music on Ravenous Deathworship.

The Deviant have managed to put together some really good and genuine material on their debut. I can't say that I wish for anything more or that there is something that this recording lacks. It feels very competent and above all it's brutal and mean. Morbid and bizarre musical torment very close to perfection.
