Finsterforst's fourth album. Originally labeled as black
forest metal due to the German region they hail from, but I don't know
what music people play in the forests, so I ignore that label. Totally
out of interest, but I guess this is just as lame as labeling music
viking metal or what Tankard plays; alcoholic metal.
With two shorter intermissions and five long tracks, reaching
from ten to twenty-two minutes, we are taken on a frenzy rollercoaster
ride through black metal to folk metal and from heavier, symphonic and
orchestral pieces into spiritual spectrums. The songs are totally diverse
within themselves, but after listening through these seventy-five minutes
several times, I feel more like I've been listening to one fucking long
track. It feels like every time I listen to Rastlos, I kind of start
all over again. I'm still trying to figure out whether this is something
I enjoy or not, since I feel that an album with this length is just
a bit too much to get a firm grip on.
The lyrics are in German and the clean sung parts feel
a bit powerless and the harsh and the straight vocal performances are
both decent, but nothing I would praise. There are many bridges that
I bang my head to and also very long instrumental pieces in the major
part of the songs. This release is an adventure through different genres
and someone will for sure call this a flawless masterpiece, but I try
to hold my horses and stay at 7 chalices, meaning a good album indeed,
but one step from great.
