Paths Of Possession - Promises In Blood
![]() Paths Of Possession plays classic heavier metal. Fast riffing, dark growls and a trace of melody here and there. George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher is also the growler of more famous Cannibal Corpse. Here he gets more melodies to work with. That immediately reveals that he has some weaknesses when it comes to that matter. The throatwork is deep and dark, but quite monotone actually. Darklands starts surprisingly melodic, with almost powermetallic riffing, before Corpsegrinder guides you into the dark. Bleed The Meek has a few seconds with an 80s thrash-riff-intro that sounds promising, but ends up into another almost overmelodic thing. The Second Coming on the other hand holds its thrashiness the whole way. The lyrics might not be revolutionary though. "Let's kill the Christian clowns" feels just a bit too much cliché. A Heart For A Heart is a bit slower and heavier, which rends it a place among the recommended tracks. Erzsebet is the obligatory instrumental soft pause song. Then follows my favourite, the heavy but melodic title track, which is a winner with its dynamic tempo changes. When The Icy Flow Of Death ends quite sudden, I try to
summon my experience. As so often I can't really say that I was especially
touched in either way. Most songs are quite good, there is a red thread
and still some variation. The musicians are skilled and the production
more than competent. But it is just not something that sticks. There
is no history made here.
