I have often dismissed Mastodon as a pretty boring band
and therefore this is the first time that I really get the opportunity
to see what they're capable of in terms of a full album. It's rough
and groovy heavy metal with some elements of stoner and even some small
parts of progressive appearances. A lot of the songs seem to wear sort
of the same uniform, although without being too monotonous. The overall
structure is built on music created decades ago, but they push things
forward with confidence and an ongoing drive. It's sonically a little
dirty to produce an atmosphere, resulting in a sound that turns out
somewhat fuzzy.
During my initial spin, I was confident that this piece
of music was going to be really good and a satisfying effort all throughout,
because the music seemed to work its way rather quickly up to greater
deeds. Several spins later, I know that this feeling was momentarily
and a result of me trying to find an excuse for not listening to this
band earlier. As a total, this release is unable to make a solid impact
and elevate me to higher grounds of elation. I must add that it's not
poor in any way, but only a few moments are in a position to speak to
me in a way that I find lasting and therefore I hand out 5 decent chalices
to Once More 'Round The Sun.
