![]() Whitechapel's music is painful to the ears. Not because I think it's bad, but because its sheer heaviness is quite excruciating. New Era Of Corruption is the band's second offering on the Metalblade label and although the band still is firmly planted in the extreme metal scene, some development can be discerned. To use words such as "light" and "melodic" can seem a bit odd - but if one compares this album to the ones before the sound on "New Era Of Corruption" is quite light when it before was very dark. You can also find quite an amount of melodic elements, much due to the stringwork of the three guitarists in the band. I would have liked this album even more if these elements would have put even more to the front of the production as they are quite nice. Phil Bozeman is still screaming like an angry boar - and if you have enjoyed the band's previous records you will find that the singing is quite unchanged. As a matter of fact, I'd go as far as to say that you have to like Bozeman's singing to like the band at all. Kevin Lane and Gabe Crisp are the duo in the rythmsection that completes the tornado that is Whitechapel. Sadly Crisp's work is barely audible underneath the thick guitars, but what's very audible is the insane playing of Lane. This guy is totally into blastbeats, but has some other very nice chops as well. For those of us that have heard Whitechapel before, the new album offers little change from the previous records, and this is just fine. But on the next record I really would like the band to get another round in the mix, since these guys' songwriting really deserves it. If you're into brutal, extreme metal you would do best
in checking out this band.
