Altar Of Plagues certainly doesn't lack ambition to produce
some of the more disturbing kind of music known to mankind. On Mammal
the Irishmen sure come close. For those of you, dear readers, that have
heard Wolves In The Throne Room's The Black Cascade you will feel right
at home.
The atmosphere in the songs is deeply atmospheric and
haunting with a very big-room ambiance especially when it comes to the
vocals. The songs in themselves are very demanding - 4 songs in total
with a runningtime checking in at 52 minutes make for very long songs
indeed.
The feeling of desperation and despair in the music is
what strikes me most - the band is very good at creating the feeling
of impending doom. This part of the music I very much enjoy, and the
only thing I really dislike is the chanting in the end of When The Sun
Drowns In The Ocean, since I don't think that anything folky should
be mixed into metal at all.
Mammal is not an album that will end up on my top 10 list
this year, but if you're looking for something original, music that
will give you the chills Mammal certainly does the job.
