Lillie: F-65 marks the long-awaited return of doom metal
legends Saint Vitus. It is named after one of Dave Chandler's favourite
downer drugs from back in the day and is the first Saint Vitus album
in 17 years as well as the first one to feature Scott "Wino"
Weinrich on vocals in 22 years.
The first song, Let Them Fall, is a slow opener that reminds
me of the monumental title track from Born Too Late. It's a song that
has grown on me quite a bit since I first heard it, as it was released
as an album teaser a couple of weeks ago. While perhaps a little shaky
at the higher notes, Wino's voice still sounds powerful after all these
years and fits the music perfectly. Another strong track is Blessed
Night, which was released as a single a while back. It's one of the
faster songs on the album, with a heavy groove and some amazing riffs.
However, as Vertigo and Withdrawal both are instrumental
songs, there are actually only five "real" songs on an album
which is just roughly half an hour long. I'm not saying that the addition
of three filler tracks would have been better, but it still feels a
little cheap after 22 years. Furthermore, the other three songs - The
Bleeding Ground, The Waste Of Time and Dependence - aren't really anything
special.
All in all, Lillie: F-65 is an okay album but still somewhat
of a disappointment. The two songs that were released before the album,
Let Them Fall and Blessed Night, are absolutely great but it's a shame
that the rest of the album isn't as strong.
