On Woe's full length debut album we are mainly hit by
heavy and pumping rock and a lighter version of groovy metal. It's crammed
with a constantly solid flow and quite a good amount of the songs are
pretty accurate and I enjoy a rather big part of the record's contents.
The entire experience seems to be covered by a feeling of sweat, dirt
and soil coming straight from the gutters of Gothenburg and the record
basically breathes out an image of substantial attitude and fire.
On the downside I frankly don't find the end result particularly
varied overall, although this rather modern appearance has its potent
influences coming from a large number of different types of music, such
a classic rock, alternative stuff and both new and old things within
the framework of heavier music. Each song really doesn't have the capacity
to come out with its very own identity and although all structures are
far from being replicated, I miss the kind of diversity that has a certain
power to really build an album piece by piece.
The vocals are often mixed pretty hard to fit the correct
position in the total picture, but I still believe that Jonny Zasella
has what it takes to finish the job all right. In the end I find this
record quite satisfying and if you feel an urge to explore the veins
of heavy rock, I believe that this album is a fairly good one to begin
with. 6 chalices to an upstanding effort.
