If you regard German lyrics as passable, and like rock
with a touch of metal, Riefenstahl is here. Singing rock in German is
perhaps not very original in
Germany. But few bands have got away
with it in the rest of the world. Instinkt is following the debut Seelenschmerz
from 2004. And to say that the predecessor did a mark on the walk of
fame is a bit exaggerated. But at least the fellows have something going
on that I don't hear every day. Let it be the language or not. Es Ist
Vorbei is a groovy rocker, lifted by Jens Esch's rough voice. Ein Wort
Von Dir is almost a ballad-like slow composition with a chorus that
scratches the surface of 'heavy'. A concept that will be repeated later,
in for example Es Tut So Weh and (Ich) Halt Dich Fest. It works once
and twice, but after the third time you get kind of bored.
Because of the language, as a non-German you inevitably
come to think of Rammstein, but actually Riefenstahl is quite far from
their fellow Germans musically, mostly. Their paths cross sometimes
though, as in Venusschrei, with its heavy riff. Die Zeit Heilt Nicht
Alle Wunden mixes soft guitar parts with a galloping chorus. An extra
point for the lyrics. Kalter Traum is a fresh breeze with its heavier
guitar work. Once again Esch lifts the thing to a higher altitude. I
would wish it to be even rougher here and there, production-vice. Without
the edges Jens Esch contribute, the instrumental parts would probably
fall kind of flat.
