Tears Of Anger - In The Shadows
![]() The Swedish band Tears Of Anger are led by Benny and Björn Jansson and the band's history is dated back to the early nineties when they operated under the moniker Mindcrime. The main focus in those days however lay on producing, engineering and playing for other artists, working for one of Sweden's best selling labels at this time, Lionheart Records. They recorded one album in the late nineties that never saw the light of day but in 2004 they finally released their debut album, entitled Still Alive .The line-up had now been completed with such great musicians as Daniel Flores (Mind's Eye) and Johan Niemann (Mind's Eye/Therion). Two years later it's time to follow up their debut album with this new offering. Musically we are treated a quite straight-forward type of progressive metal that is heavy yet always melodic. My first reaction when I heard the album was that Björn Jansson is a dead ringer for Jorn Lande. The music actually also reminds me of Jorn's solo albums quite a lot. The album lifts off with the title track in a heavy mood and passes without leaving any traces on yours truly. The next track Spirit Running Free is a lot better, especially the chorus where a great guitar melody is helping out in a great way. Up next is Tears In My Eyes which has developed into my favourite track on In The Shadows. The heavy guitars in the verse create a nice contrast to the brilliant chorus with its neo classical feeling. When Sell My Soul and the quite mystical Live These Dreams both are great compositions I suddenly began to have high hopes for this album since this is only half way through. The second half however does not live up to my expectations at all. It seems that they ran out of ideas here and the feeling of déjà vu comes to mind more than once. The melodies are no by near as infectious as on the first half either. In conclusion I must say though that I am quite impressed
of Tears Of Anger. The performance on In The Shadows are nothing but
top notch. They are extremely close in getting a much higher grade but
I leave that for the next album which I hope will have a bit more diversity
in the long run. I am pretty sure that Jorn Lande's hardcore fans will
love this though.
