Swedish constellation Evergrey has never really been able
to reach the bigger masses and although I enjoy this new effort, I find
it hard to see the band finally pass through the gate to great recognition
and massive success. Perhaps this unit plays a type of music that is
too hard to understand and too complex to embrace for regular heavy
metal hearts.
Evergrey, with Tom S. Englund in the driver's seat, nevertheless
continues its sort of progressive way and its personal type of metal,
filled with agonizing sections and strong empathy. The band has its
very own ways to find stuff to complete the experience with suffering
moments and the basic foundations can hardly be mistaken for anything
else on the scene. The music is absolutely not specifically complicated
and although it's labeled as something progressive, it still has a very
melodic touch to it.
The riffs are mostly heavy, but at the same time, the
music shines a little by the keyboard notes, which function as well
balanced elements and aren't placed too loud in the mix, which is pretty
common in heavy music when bands try to fix this instrument to a solid
position in the total outcome. All in all, a rather satisfying effort,
but I highly doubt that this record will give the band its well deserved
boost, although the track King Of Errors definitely is an awesome moment.
