About a year ago I saw Carnifex champion the stage in
Malmö as a part of the brutally heavy package Bonecrusher Fest.
Back then I kind of liked what I saw and heard. Sadly this feeling is
gone as I listen to Hell Chose Me. Totally predictable, and sadly plain
boring music meets the ears. As many bands in the much loathed deathcore
subgenre Carnifex have a good production, this one from Zack Ohren -
but what does this help when the songs are as sucky as Sorrowspell and
the titletrack?
The main impression Hell Chose Me leaves me with is that
boy, have I heard this album before - blastbeats, growling, breakdowns
- all delivered with the feeling that the band could do this asleep
standing on their heads in a dark room for all good it's going to do
them. This is the type of music best heard between bands during a concert
as it is as easily ignored as a statistical report on how much corn
that was grown in the southern part of Sweden.
