When it comes to classic German thrash excellence, no
band better epitomizes this than Vendetta. Almost 20 years later, after
hearing thousands of titles, Brain Damage remains my favourite release
of all time, followed by Deathrow - Deception Ignored. Last year when
I interviewed Mario from Vendetta, I was so excited about the new album
in the works. Their 2005 free Demo proved most promising, even with
all the drastic line-up changes.
Klaus "Heiner" Ullrich - the bass player is the only alumni
still in tact, after all those years of brain damage, through dominance
of violence; but the revamped Vendetta recapitulate with a pure Hate
that will never die in hell, so prepare yourself for hostility!
As I fade to insanity, this has proven to be a very difficult review
for me to espouse, as I am so truly in love with the songs, lyrics,
and the precious existence of Vendetta's first two releases. Hate truly
embodies these essentials, but ultimately, the brave band fails, and
falls into suicidal lunacy. Thankfully, Brain Damage and Go And Live...Stay
And Die have been recently remastered on Metal Axe, and if Hate does
not quite measure up to your expectations, I highly recommend securing
these mandatories at all cost.
This review may lead to caustic conversation, but honesty is the ultimate
brutality on the road to realization. Hate is definitely a Vendetta
release. Mario Vogel is one mother of a metal front man embodying a
solid thrash persona, with some vintage hardcore bite, similar to early
Agnostic Front. Frank Schölch has revivified the Vendetta trademark
crunch, and although, he shines as the sole guitarist; Daxx and Mickey
would be proud. The drastic drumming of Thomas "Lubber" Krämer
really ensnares.
Hate was recorded, mixed and mastered at SU 2 Studio in Saarbrücken.
The war chant begins with the metal might of Hannibal, an instant classic
with it's tongue and cheek allusion to early Metallica: "Hannibal,
Kill 'em all!". Lying Society continues the voracious polemic for
Traitor's Fate. The death march and gallop of Guerillas invades with
that Systems Of Death insanity. The title track is totally addictive,
with an iniation into rage, reminiscient of Tankard's Chemical Invasion
(also remastered and essential!) tinctured with Overkill's New High
In Lows. An angry diatribe is uttered from the protaganist, who speaks,
spitting forth vitriolic black as coal bitterness, and lavaging unexpected
expectorate toward some bitch; like Farewell To Slut suggests on Chemical
Invasion.
After such a mind storm of recoiled riffs and alluring leads on the
first few tracks, I begin to loathe and drift, as Hate languishes, undermined
by its own chugs of corruption. Prepare Yourself For Hostility and Mother
are a bit too modern, with slow pacing prominance, interlaced with average
soloing. Rise For Revolution commands a better audience, then the CD
ends abruptly on the rather lame - Dead People Are Cool, taken from
their 2003 Demo of the same name.
I was so impressed with the 2005 live Demo, which the band allowed fans
to download for free from their website, so where are such sonic hegemonies
like Shine and Black As Coal? With a running length of 30 minutes, these
songs could have easily made the cut. I would have also enjoyed their
rendition of Slayer's Black Magic. Another disgruntled argument I propose
is where are the metaphysical lyrics which once moved my mind, heart,
and spirit? There is no Precious Existence, Never Die, or Conversation
as cause for reflection. The vapid lyrics are simple and innane. Where
are the solos and harmonies from On The Road, Drugs & Corruption,
or Fade To Insanity?
Overall, with such a thrash resurgent scene, Vendetta will continue
to uphold the metal law, but for purists and old school radicals, this
may be one time when Hate is not the answer!
