Vinyl release: October 7th 2014.
With its debut album, the Australian quartet Convent Guilt
displays a desire to give the metal community a lesson in classic metal
music, by playing traditional heavy metal including lots of aspects
similar to the earlier 80's. The band has really managed to recreate
a sound deriving from 3 decades ago, but personally I find myself listening
to this record with a little bit of saturation at this present point.
I occasionally think that the band's music somehow may seem to mainly
be focused on bringing out this older type of sound, rather than to
come out with great and unforgettable songs.
In the end putting out memorable songs is what matters
the most when people decide what's worth spending money on and what's
not and although a number of cool guitar plays are presented, I really
can't find something that has the ability to take this album closer
to the skies. The vocal performance is definitely not this unit's greatest
asset and I actually believe that they would be better off if they were
to find a new and powerful singer, who simply also has a better vocal
technique than what their current one has.
Quite a good load of the disc's musical content is pretty
okay, but at the same time I miss the very best moments as well and
some of the material feels somewhat idle, even though the band is supposed
to be hungry and strongly activated as newcomers.
Although there are a few good songs in which they are
able to come out with both melody and feeling, my final verdict declares
this being a rather unexciting experience when push comes to shove.
I have heard similar stuff to the music that this band represents countless
times before and even if I necessarily don't need something completely
fresh to value great music, a little more originality doesn't hurt.
