Who plays what on this release isn't clear, but the
following musicians have in some way contributed to this record: Lars
Johansson, Mats Levén, Klas Gunnerfeldt, Tobbe Moen, Stefan Gunnarsson
and Roger E.
Lars Johansson of Candlemass has been part of that band
since the early days, but still hasn't contributed to the songwriting
in those on and off 3 decades, since bass player Leif Edling handles
those hardships alone. With Leif now being on undefined recovery, Lars
has, with a bunch of invited guests, instead created something that
differs a lot from the old doom metal act and it comes out as kind of
a result that I believe he more than anything care about personally.
This record actually feels a little dull with its significantly
guitar dominated 70's blues influenced hard rock. It simply doesn't
have a strong enough badass attitude in order to make me wanna move
to the music. The songs are also rather slow all throughout the record
and although it doesn't lack character and freedom of choice, this effort
in the end comes out kind of colorless and ineffective, Sonically the
end result is pretty authentic nevertheless, because I think that the
boys have been able to reproduce and capture some of the magic that
was present over 40 years ago.
These 9 songs essentially seems like a trip down memory
lane for the Candlemass guitarist and this music isn't something that
I can identify with. It's definitely not a complete failure, but I really
don't fancy what's given. It has a few moments which I find attractive,
but as an entirety it just can't attain any kind of monumental position
or irresistible state at all and therefore I hand out only 3 chalices.
