![]() Certain records you get so happy to get access to at first, only to feel disappointed about five listenings down the road. Entity from technical death metalband Origin is such a record. Some of you dear readers might know that I really enjoy technical death metal. I have made a journey from Transmutation by Ophiolatry, over Apocalyptic Feasting by Brain Drill to Antigama's The Warning to a place that I can actually say that I have a fairy good bead on what technical death metal is about. My objections to Origin's Entity are, not surprising at all, about that the lads in the band, guitarrist Paul Ryan, basist Mike Flores, drummer John Longstreth and singer Jason Keyser, cannot play. There is a tremendous amount of skill here - and plenty of opportunities to hear this demonstrated. But the songs don't match this skill. After a while I notice my brain shutting down as the songs do not contain much else as demonstrations of said skill - and this simply isn't enough. Especially in comparison to preceding record Antithethis that have songs so much stronger. The only thing I think is better on Entity is the sound. The production is rich and strong. I will not say that Entity is a complete disappointment - but I can easily say that my expectations are not fulfilled. Not by a long shot.
