I know many metalheads that got big smiles when this
record came out - yours truly included. Being straightforward and sticking
to a formula is, in this case, not a bad thing. Death metal with plenty
of thrashelements has always been The Crown's chosen field - and that
they are masters within this domain becomes clear from note 1 on Doomsday
King.
Starting off with chords reminiscent of Black Sabbath
before launching into the ferocious onslaught that dominates the record
makes me want to just laugh out of joy. Throughout Doomsday King you
can hear just how much fun The Crown are having, and they should be,
believe you me. The title track alongside Angel Of Death 1839, Age Of
Iron and Soul Slasher are songs of the highest caliber that is ample
evidence that this band should be very far from calling it quits.
There are of course lots of albums in this sub-genre out
there, but this record is not about being original. It's about demonstrating
the strengths of thrashed death metal - and showing that sometimes a
record doesn't have to be high up on the originalitychart to be great.
Besides the fact that there are good songs on the record,
Adam Dutkiewicz has done an excellent job with the production, it's
aggressive, fat, and totally designed to bring out the essence of the
songs.
Don't expect to be blown away by totally original music
when listening to Doomsday King, but do expect to be blown away by the
sheer force of this triumphant return of The Crown.
