It takes about 30 seconds after the intro of Svarttjern's
fourth full-length 'Dødsskrik' to conclude they are Norwegians.
The riffing style, melodies and arrangements simply reeks of the darkness
and filth excelled by bands like Taake, Urgehal and Tsjuder. This is
by no means an original album, but its sheer quality makes that a minor
issue. I am not acquainted with the bands previous offerings, but 'Dødsskrik'
comes really close to the immense standards set by the aforementioned
acts.
Vocalist HansFyrste recently left Ragnarok to once again
focus fully on Svarttjern. There is no doubt Svarttjern came out as
winners by that decision, HansFyrste's performance on 'Dødsskrik'
is simply amazing. His maddened growls reinforces the feelings of insanity
and despair throughout the album effectively putting the melodies in
the center all the way through.
This is of great benefit as the melodies and arrangements
are the highlights of 'Dodsskrik'. The riffwork on the other hand does
not reach the excellence of Urgehal or Tsjuder and does not really grab
the listener mercilessly by the throat the same way the melodies does.
If Svarttjern were to combine the captivating melodies of 'All Hail
Satan', 'Det River I Meg' and 'Whispers and Prayers' with equally captivating
riffs they would become an absolute killer of an act.
'Dødsskrik' is highly recommended for any fans
of the aforementioned Norwegian trio. HansFyrste's insane vocals and
the melodies they conjure are perhaps the best to come out of Norway
so far this year. Urgehal still holds the Norwegian throne of corpse
painted skulls, but as the king is soon to be dead a merciless power
struggle is waiting and Svarttjern are definitely lurking in the shadows
just waiting for a chance to strike.
