Dutch black metal band Sammath's third full length album
Dodengang, brought upon us by the german label Folter Records, is an
orgy in war and its sound makes me think of the mid days of for example
Marduk's career or the very early days of Gorgoroth. Very naked, raw
and mean in its sound.
Sammath's style could best be described as pretty fast
paced black metal with loads of mean melody lines. Even though the music
feels a bit light and lacks a heavy production, I find Dodengang pretty
ok. Mostly because of the primitive but still raw melody lines in the
song structures, song after song catches my interest. I can't help wondering
what kind of album this would have been with a fat production as the
music feels so incredible mean and in some way the very musical essence
of what black metal is all about. Good and interesting song writing
gently mixed with aggressive arrangements on drums that mostly is represented
by furious blast attacks that can be heard on for example the splendid
Imminence War Death.
At its best times, Dodengang strikes me and I get a feeling
of a superior war machine sweeping over frostbitten lands at the outskirts
of Stalingrad with the ruins of a tormented city in a blood red horizon.
The thing about Dodengang that annoys me apart from the lousy production
is the vocals, some times brilliant and some times totally misplaced
and weak in a way that makes me think of a die hard teenager with a
microphone that discovered Bathory for the first time... A bit sorry
as the music feels like a punishment, the way it is meant I guess. Sammath's
Dodengang is a album that actually reaches far over average in the genre.
Unfortunately the negative aspects fades the black shining light of
this war machine.
