Bass player Eric Brittingham has after the recordings
reportedly parted ways amicably with the band and Rudy Sarzo has entered
the ranks to fill the vacant spot.
Devil City Angels is yet another group of musicians who
have gathered to form a new band or a project or whatever you prefer
to call it. Quite commonly the end result doesn't come out particularly
well with these kinds of constellations, partly probably because of
that the individuals no longer plays the music that they earlier were
able to write and perform exactly in a way that they were so skilled
at and experienced with.
This self titled effort is a little bit different from
what I've heard from these guys before and I believe that they have
presumably created pieces of music in which they find great stimulation
in, without having much thought of that their potential record buyers
nowadays are aging and supposedly don't even have the slightest clue
that this unit even exists. Of course it has its recognizable attributes
and moments from their previous bands as well, but it's still very far
from being just a reflection of their past.
The songs are mainly in the vicinity of easy-going and
pretty traditional American hard rock with strong influences of the
genre's heydays in the 80's and in the early 90's. Of course we have
a ballad present too, which naturally in the end undisputedly comes
out as the most lame track. Frankly, it took a few spins before I found
some enjoyment in this 38-minute installment, but after listening to
it for about 15 times and although if a couple of tracks are quite similar
to each other in one way or another, I at this point think that it's
actually a pretty good product that these veterans have come up with.
